Since 2006, Afif Essi's family has fulfilled his dream of owning a restaurant at Mom's Diner.

Mom’s Diner

By Stephen Wolek

If you are looking for a delicious meal in a convenient location, look no further than Mom’s Diner.

Mom’s has the perfect blend of Middle Eastern flavor and American staples for reasonable prices all within the comfort of a family-run atmosphere on Syracuse’s Westcott Street.

Hours: Mom’s Diner is open seven days a week. On weekdays, you can dine from 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., and on weekends you can stop in from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Get your fill for breakfast (their specialty) or lunch, and be aware that Mom’s peak hours come during the weekend.

The Scene: Mom’s is one of the only diners around where you are asked to submit your order at the front counter. Eva is most often taking the orders, and she or her other family members will bring your food to you. You are free to serve your own beverage while you wait for Mom or one of the Essi brothers to flip your eggs.

The Food: You will never have a better “Sunrise Special” than Mom’s spicy version. With a mix of Middle Eastern spice and a dab of salsa, the spicy eggs are a hit at Mom’s Diner. The Spicy Sub Slam is a gargantuan breakfast sandwich, and the French toast is some of the fluffiest you will ever have. Order a side of Mom’s home fries or hash browns for a starchy complement. And don’t be afraid to try the Lebaneh yogurt spread on your bagel, it’s the diner’s specialty. For lunch, grab a a burger, a sandwich or a salad.

The Coffee: At Mom’s you get to pour the coffee. Feel free to serve yourself, and if you aren’t looking for a pick-me-up you can grab a soda, an orange juice or a Vitamin Water from the fridge in the front of the diner. Mom’s does not serve alcohol. Then again, who wants it in the morning anyways?

The Crowd: Mom’s patrons are as casual as the atmosphere. They serve the regulars, families and college students trying to fight off a hangover. Come to hang out, drink your coffee and stay as long as you like.

The Family: Each member of the Essi family has a role at Mom’s Diner. The family lost their brother and son, Afif — who opened the diner in the summer of 2006 — and is keeping his dream alive of running a successful restaurant close to their home.

The Prices: Mom’s menu features any breakfast food you desire at a great price. Try the “Sunrise Special” for around $8, an omelet for around $7, a breakfast sandwich combo for $6 or French toast for less than $5. The lunch menu has burgers and sandwiches at more affordable prices than many fast food chains.

Great family the best that Westcott Street has to offer. They have a smile for you when you need it. Just a walk south from here you can see them all.
